Welcome

Welcome to the Grimsby Ice Hockey Club under 12’s (U12’s) team!

Firstly I would like to welcome all the new players and their families to the club and to our U12’s team, not forgetting those who aren’t so new, welcome back!

You should have already received a registration pack and players handbook from the Grimsby Ice Hockey Club (if not please see me and I shall get you one).

This booklet is specifically for U12s players and contains more in depth information about the under 12s team, the coaches, manager and training program.

Who’s who?

This seems the ideal opportunity to introduce to the parents and children the team who will be working with them during the course of the coming season. It is also to be noted that all the adults below have been CRB checked so that they can work with young people.

The Coach

My name is Ian Watson. I started playing when I was 19 years old (a bit late to be taking up the sport really) and I have been playing Ice Hockey for 23 years. I have played for Grimsby Buffaloes, Humberside Seahawks and Grimsby Redwings. After taking time away from the sport I returned to Ice Hockey nearly three seasons ago and I am currently playing for the Grimsby Lightning.

I have coached at various levels in Grimsby and have attended various coaching seminars. I have recently re-taken my Level 2 coaching certificate and I currently coach the Grimsby Ghosts U12’s team,

I am also coaching children from 5-16 years for the Grimsby Leisure Centres Ice Hockey Development Programme, which takes children who have never skated right through to being competent hockey players. I also coach beginners from 17 years onwards for the Grimsby Leisure Centre.

The Assistant Coaches

Hello My name is John Belt (Belty) and I didn’t start playing hockey until I was 21, it was either ice hockey or rugby and since I still have all my teeth (for now) I think I chose the right sport!

I have now been playing for a total of 8 years and have progressed through participating in the senior development programme, playing in the house leagues and then joining Grimsby Lightning.

I am a level 1 coach and assist in the training for the Grimsby Ghosts. I enjoy coaching the kids and am proud of all they have achieved; I hope this carries on this season. I also coach for the Grimsby Leisure Centre Ice Hockey Development Program with Ian Watson. (See above)

Hello, my name is Mark Gray. I started playing hockey as a young lad (that was some time ago) and played for the Mohawks, who were the under 14’s team way back then. I also played for the under 16s team which was the Dynamos. I then had a break to go to work and grow up a little bit; I still don’t think the growing up part has worked!

I now play recreational hockey for Grimsby Lightning and have done for the past 9 years.

I am a level 1 coach and am also the assistant coach for the under 10’s team, so if any of you Ghosts out there have little brothers or sisters who are interested in ice hockey send them to me.

I am also hoping to take my level 2 coaching certificate this season.

I enjoy helping out with the U12s team and see the progression they have made from Phantoms (10’s) to Ghosts.

Hello, my name is Nick Coulbeck; I started playing in 1977, at the ripe old age of 15.

I played for the Leopards house team, which became the Flyers. I also played for the Grimsby Dynamoes, which was the junior team, to the Buffaloes.

The Dynamoes was considered the best junior team in the country, and there was a lot more teams then, than there is now. When I was 17, I moved up to the Buffaloes as back up to Len Finning. I had my first start, against Liverpool, in 1979, and we won 6-2. I trialed for GB in 1979 and 1980. At the time I was employed as an apprentice, I could not get time off from work, so never played.

I played for the Buffaloes through Div 1, and into the Heineken Premier League. In '88 I had to stop playing, due to a shoulder injury. I started playing recreational hockey for the Lighting in 97.

I’m a Level 1 coach, and take great pleasure, and pride, in trying to help the goalies.
